‘Forecast’ weather update for September 5

Weekly weather update for professional turf managers from Frank Rossi:

Temp & GDD

Two consecutive months of above normal temps and this week alone at 4-7 above normal region-wide. Heat stress persisted region-wide as well bringing unrelenting humidity into the evening. Soils have returned to warming as dry conditions persisted, into the upper 70’s for highs and upper 60’s in the north.

Moisture

A mostly dry week across the region except for a few spots of 0.5” in CNY, 1-2” in Buffalo. ET values very high for early September at 1-1.25” region-wide,  especially in areas that did not receive any rainfall. Drought monitor continues to indicate areas of abnormal and severe drought condiitons. USDA Topsoil moisture map also indicating more drying.

Forecast

Hot and dry conditions expected for much of the week with intense heat expected into the weekend. Early week chances of the remnants of Hermine hitting the Coast have lessened with some wind and low rainfall amounts expected. Temps expected in upper 80’s and 90’s , low upper 60’s and 70’s. High temp conditions expected to persist in the 8-14d outlook, keeping disease and heat stress pressure high.
