Weekly weather update for professional turf managers from Frank Rossi:
Temp & GDD
Another above normal week for much of the region. Warmest along the I-95 corridor again at 4-6 degrees F above, slightly cooler inland and north. Widespread heat stress continued for third straight week and five out of last seven weeks! Soil temp among the warmest recorded, well into the 80’s at 2” depth along I-95, upper 70’s inland and low 70’s in much of Upstate New York.
Moisture
Another spotty rainfall pattern with heavy downpours, small drizzles and complete misses! Most rec’d <0.5” with Western MA and LI < 0.25”, FLX 0.5-1” and wet areas south of NYC 2”plus. Again ET levels remain at record high levels with most losing about 0.2-0.3” per day and as much 1.3” for the week. Dry areas experience extremely low RH that causes intense drying!
Forecast
A stalled front over the weekend brought much rain to the NYC area and south, with some relief to the north. Total still lagging for season and very dry but cooler (closer to normal) conditions expected for the week. Night temps expected to drop and rainfall expected to be scarce for next 8-14d.
