‘Forecast’ weather update for May 19

Weekly weather update for professional turf managers from Frank Rossi:

Temp & GDD

A fourth cooler than normal week, 4 to 6 degrees below normal to the south along I-95 corridor, and inland to the north/west only 2 to 4 degrees below normal. Base 50GDD have now moved behind last year’s very slow cold spring and a full two weeks behind normal. Keep in mind at this time of the year, GDDs can catch up rapidly. Soils continue to lag in the upper 40s and just into the mid-50s to far south of the region.

Moisture

Storm expected last week did not deliver much rainfall, except to the far south. Most areas received < .5″ and .5″ to 1″ north from the Hudson Valley. ET .5″ to .75″. Some moisture deficits exist along the New England Coast and the northern I-95 corridor.

Forecast

A slightly active showery and very cool weekend will linger along the coast but give way to a big warm up and dry start to the week. Expect above normal temps into the high 70’s and 80’s north. South of NYC will warm to normal (it will feel much warmer!). Expect some drying for now but long term models calling for warm and above normal moisture.
