‘Forecast’ weather update for July 4

Weekly weather update for professional turf managers from Frank Rossi:

Temp & GDD

A close to normal week (0-2 degrees F) for the region but brought about by south of NYC being slightly above normal and north of NYC and Upstate NY and Northern New England being above normal. Base 50 GDD show we are right at normal compared to last year but widely different regionally for the 15yr. avg. Along the Great Lakes remains as much as 2 weeks behind and
along the coast 10 days ahead. Soils warming at the 2” depth into the low to mid 70’s.

Moisture

The tale of two regions continues with much of the area north of NYC very dry (<0.25”) and south of the city, especially southern New Jersey and Delmarva peninsula, rec’d 2-4”+. ET continues to record highest values (1.25”) in some cases 0.4” of water lost from EvapPan, used to model ET.

Forecast

After cool start over the weekend temps begin to warm into peak heat and steam midweek with no reliable rain expected. Expect temps to reach into 90’s (slightly above normal). This warm up expects to persist for a few weeks with still some evening cooling to the north of NYC. Heat stress, Pythium, Brown Patch all risks expected to be high along I-95.
